The 9 man World Championships in Miami has created a buzz the the 9 man Nation since last Jan. Teams have played in tournaments for the past year to position their teams in the "Sweet 16" for this tournament.
The 9 man game has created a new level of competition and has seen a massive jump in overall tournament participation. This is something the 8 man game should take note of.
For some reason the 8 man game does not embrace change well. Too many tournaments have no overall meaning and the number of teams that play in tournaments have gone down drastically. The overall number of teams that play 8 man has become stagnant and have decreased over the years. Teams only want to play in tournaments that are in their backyard and do not travel. The economy has played a major part in this, but teams must take a note from 9 man to combat this problem.
9 man figured out, that in order to increase tournament size, meaning and urgency in year long tournaments, they needed to move as one and select several tournaments that had an overall meaning and a point system that rewarded teams for playing in tournaments. In effect, they bought in to the idea of having regular (tournament ) season (that kept track of a won-loss record) with the playoffs and Super Bowl being played in Miami. They gave their season meaning and an end! They have also increased the amount of prize-money that is awarded to teams that play in these tournaments.
The 8 man game has fallen short of goal. Teams barley play in tournaments (some back out) and then what to show up to win a national championship in January then want to complain about seeding and game times. Forcing teams to play in tournaments that have a meaning would work for 8 man just like it has for 9 man. If your team elects not play play on a circuit, then you can still play in Vegas, but in a "Open Division" I realize it is hard to get your whole team to commit to every tournament you play in. That is why teams should choose tournaments in which your team can maximize the most from a tournament? Teams should not be allowed to put together an all-star teams and show up once a year to play. 9 man has true World Championship that will be played in Miami because teams had to qualify to play in this event. It would be nice if 8 man could do the same
